Hulu Desktop

Hulu labs has released the desktop version of their  application sometime in May. Though I was a bit late in trying out (I tried it sometime in June), I was really impressed by the quality of the video delivered. On top of it, Hulu has a huge collection of movies, TV Shows etc and its a pleasure to watch all of your fav programs just on your desktop.

Quality wise, videos are probably the best today online (unless I am missing something here) and they all are of HD quality. I have watched 5 movies so far (some of my all time favs like Mission Impossible, Basic Instinct, Back to the Future etc) and all of them played seamlessly. The only caveat is that you would see 30 sec commercials for every 10-15 minutes. That is not bad at all comparing to the movies we watch on TV. And the best part is  there is a display as well that tells how many seconds are left in the commercial. The other nice feature of watching stuff in Hulu desktop is that you can hover mouse to any point in the progess bar to navigate to any scene and the actual scene at that point is displayed (of course with some amount of delay) and you can start watching the video from that point. This is really a amazing feature since lot of times we try to look for a particular scene in a movie and its really tough to get into that scene just by dragging the progess bar of the video player. I must confess, watching Basic Instict with the feature was a real treat Smile

The Hulu has a huge inventory of movies, TV Shows today and getting them all at absolutely no cost is  really a steal. I would recomend this to everybody interesting in watching stuff online. Watching the video at Hulu.com has also almost the same experience, but I would rate watching at your desktop a better experience.

For beginers, Hulu Desktop is a lean-back viewing experience for your personal computer. It features a sleek new look that's optimized for use with standard Windows Media Center remote controls or Apple remote controls, allowing you to navigate Hulu's entire library with just six buttons. For users without remotes, the application is keyboard and mouse-enabled. Hulu Desktop is a downloadable application and will work on PCs and Macs.

Some of the key features of Hulu Desktop are

Navigating - Use the "menu" or "back" button on your remote to toggle between the current video and the menu (on your PC, use the tab or escape key). From the menu, use your left or right keys to move between menu items and press "OK" or "Play" on your remote to choose a selection. While watching the video, you can view your progress within the video by tapping the up or down arrow, and then use the same arrows to adjust volume. Your remote also controls playback: you can pause or resume a video (use the spacebar on your keyboard), jump forward or back, or seek a particular scene.

Finding Your Way Around - Scan Hulu's lineup of TV shows and movies, which you can browse in alphabetical order, by network or studio, or by Hulu channel. Watch a random video anytime by pressing and holding the "play" or "enter" button on your remote. Press and hold the "menu" button (tab or escape on your keyboard) to pull up a video menu to browse other options

Personalizing Hulu Desktop - Get the most out of Hulu Desktop by linking it to your Hulu account. If you don't have an account, sign up for one at hulu.com and then start Hulu Desktop, where you can scroll down the main menu to "Profiles" and log in by adding your profile. From there, you can access personalized data about your account, including your queue, subscriptions and viewing history. Go to "preferences" under your account for custom settings, ranging from closed captioning settings to video playback quality.
