Automatic message translation

Gmail now supports automatic message translation from any language to a language you know.Simply enable "Message Translation" from the Labs tab under Settings, and when you receive an email in a language other than your own, Gmail will help you translate it into a language you can understand. In one click. The feature can be used for 41 languages. Gmail will suggest a language to translate the message to, and also gives you the option to translate the message to different language.

Import Contacts from other Accounts

This feature is targetted mainly for users who are switching from other emails like yahoo, AOL, Hotmail and many more.At one click you can import all your contacts from external accounts to your gmail account.Personally this has been very useful for me. I was/am a strict user of yahoo since a decade and even though I got my gmail account 5 years back, I still have not made a complete transition to gmail. Hope this drives me more towards gmail - for the feature it offers, yahoo is no match. This new feature is available in all newly-created Gmail accounts, and it is slowly being rolled out to all existing accounts. It'll take longer than the few hours or days that most Gmail features take to get out to everyone. You'll know it's on for your account when you see the Accounts and Import tab (formerly just called Accounts) under Settings.

Suggest more recipients :Once you pick some email recipients, Gmail suggests more people you might want to include based on the groups of people you email most often.

Google Docs gadget :Adds a box in the left column which displays your Google Docs. Shows recent docs, starred docs, and has fast search.

Create a Document :Allows you to create a Google Document from an email conversation or a new blank document if your keyboard shortcuts are enabled by hitting 'g' then 'w'.

YouTube previews in mail :Shows a video preview whenever you receive a YouTube link in an email. You can watch the video right inline!

Tasks :Tasks adds a to-do list to Gmail. After adding the lab, click the Tasks link above the chat box on the left-hand-side of the page. Your task list will appear on the right – click anywhere in the list and start typing to add a task. You can also create a task from an email: from the More Actions menu, choose Add to Tasks when viewing an email, or press shift+T if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled. For more shortcuts, explore the Actions menu at the bottom of your task list.

More of these tricks on using gmail effectively and making your mailing experience more enjoyable can be seen at  Labs tab under Settings.

Few days back I was wondering about how somebody determines the popularity of a mobile application. When I say mobile application , I mean the application developed by somebody and distributed by these popular mobile devices like iPhone, Blackberry, Android based phones etc.

This question came to me when Apple announced that there were 1 billion downloads from their app store few days back.Determining a popularity of a website is quite simple. You can get the statistics of the unique visitors, number of hits and other parameters that can determine its popularity. But when it comes to  mobile application, the parameters are quite dynamic for the following reasons

  • A application could have been downloaded n times, but this does not necessarily mean that its quite popular. A user would have downloaded it sometime back and simply kept it idle or would have even deleted it.
  • There should be some way to determine the most used mobile application which along with the number of downloads would tell accurately how popular is that application
  •  I agree that a mobile application that does not use an internet connection is like a traditional desktop app and it is almost impossible to determine the usage of that unless the mobile maker provides some API to determine this.
  •  I also wonder how Apple rates its top application in the AppStore, I belive its just based on the number of downloads
I hope mobile makers or its software makers like Apple/Google/RIM etc are hearing this and they would include this capability in their future releases. In the meantime if anybody has more inputs/suggestions to determine any mobile application popularity, please do leave a comment or share your thought. Its highly appreciated!

Google has introduced a new feature called 'Google Profile', which lets users present themselves on Google products and control how they appear on google, tell others a bit more about who they are to other google users. Using Google Profile, it is possible to create a personal page that links to your blog or other profiles and keep family and friends up to date with your contact information and pictures.

You can share your web content in one central location while including links to your blog, online photos, and other profiles such as social networking sites. Since you control what others see, your profile won't display any private information unless you've added it to your profile.By setting your Google profile to show your full name, you can allow people to find you more easily by enabling your profile to be searched by name.

Chances are that you might already have a Google profile for yourselve if you had ever written reviews on Google Maps or created articles on Google Knol or shared Google Reader items, or added books to your Google Book Search library.

Setting up your Google profile is simple, especially if you already have a Google account such as Google mail (or Gmail).

Features of Google Profile
  • Receive messages. Enable the 'Send a message' feature to allow anyone with a Google Account to email you without revealing your email address.
  • Add photos. Enhance your profile by embedding photos from Flickr or Picasa.
  • Create a page about you. Write a short bio in the About me tab, reveal your superpower, and tell people what you still can't find using Google.
  • Add your contact information. Share your information with your friends and family, so they always have the most up-to-date information. You control who sees it.
  • Add links to your other profiles and sites. Make it easier for friends to see your other content on the Web. You can link to Google content, including your Blogger blog, public Picasa Web Albums and Google Reader shared items as well as other pages on the Web such as Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Show your location. 'My places' includes all the cities you've entered on your profile. Your current location and where you've lived are displayed on a map.
Techcrunch reports that Google is now giving away 10,000 sets of business cards to people that have one.The deal, in partnership with iPrint.com, is being promoted with a huge link at the top of Google Profile pages. The link reads, “New! Order profile business cards to tell your friends about your profile.” Click on the link and you’ll be taken to an ordering page. With the promotion, the first 10,000 people who sign up will get 25 free cards. But you’ll have to sign up for an iPrint account to get them. And unfortunately, these cards are only available to be shipped in the continental U.S. And yes, the card even has an “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. But sadly no, it doesn’t have a watermark
