ReadyNas and Time Machine backup

I have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo server which I use for backups, as a media server and a harddisk server accessible across my home network. Very recently I had changed my router to a much powerful Belkin Dual Band N Router for better streaming of online content on my Sony 3D TV. After changing the router I faced a very strange problem that time machine of my Macbook Pro stopped detecting the ReadyNas server even though the Hard disk server was enabled for Time Machine backups. After trying lot of things I had reached a frustration point and was very scared of loosing my data if something happens to my Mac.

Today I found a very simple solution for that and if any of you have the same problem (ReadyNas getting detected from Finder but not my Time Machine) I would strongly suggest to follow the below steps

  • Open Finder, From the menu choose Go - Connect to Server. Type in afp://<readynas>/ReadyNAS (substitute <readynas> with your ReadyNAS IP address).
  • Login using username ReadyNAS and the chosen password, I also added the password to the keychain.
  • You should now be able to see the ReadyNAS volume in Time Machine.

Photography - Canon 60d and PhotoManhattan

I recently purchased a Canon 60D kit (2 lenses - 17-55mm and 55 to 250mm) from amazon. Its more than a month I bought it and I have not really experimented with that other than using it in Auto mode (pictures there too come with amazing quality). Due to my busy schedule, I decided the idea of learning it myself is a tough task and hence googled for photography classes in Manhattan. Among the top searches PhotoManhatan was one of the good one for learning  photography basics + they were pretty decent in terms of price. A $319 price for 2 months course (once a week for 2 hours) is not a bad deal. I had also called few guys from craigslist and many of them charge around 200+ for 4-5 hours of teaching.

This course is supposed to be a  complete training on all the basic and intermediate photography techniques and processes: Camera settings, Exposure control, Photo-Composition, Focus control, Basic Lighting, Portraiture and Project development. I just hope that I learn something out of this and this would be a stepping stone in fullfilling my desire of becoming a decent photographer. And with just around 15 to 20 fellow beginers in the course, this should be a perfect setup. The course begins on 6th June and ends 8th August with a choice of Exibhition at the end of the course

My journey with Photography begins with this step. Will post my learnings from the course!

IPad2 is out today!

IPad2 is out today!

I never thought serioulsy about buying an ipad for myself since I already have an iphone and a macbook pro(which I mostly carry wherever I go, be it my daily commute or weekend drives). I always used to argue with my friends that not everybody needs a ipad and its maily for gamers and for readers. But I was proved wrong the other day - Monday March 7th. It was our 7th wedding anniversary and I had taken my wife to a romantic dinner cruise in New york city. The cruise was from Bauteux and it was awesome, much in Newyork style. If somebody is planning to have some romantic night I would definitely recomend it,the only drawback being the high price tag - $157 per person. With the cruise you would have never seen New York’s world-renowned skyline quite like this. The most up-close views, separated only by glass windows and water. An elegant experience of creative plated dining prepared fresh onboard daily. Sophisticated live jazz for dancing. Outstanding service and it was like an European-inspired cruise in New york city!

Coming to my ipad impression - as usual in the cruise a lady with a  camera came in as we were getting ready for the dinner in the cruise and asked to pose for some portraits which we happily did. Then she opened her ipad and showed us all the photos taken instantly on it (wirelessly transferred). On a normal day probably I would not have taken the photo, but she displaying it in ipad and all made so much difference that I ended up buying one of the photos on my wife's insistance.

Now that the ipad 2 is out today on stores, I am seriously finding reasons to own one of it. Following are some of the features that I really liked about it

  • Thinner than a iphone - just can't believe it!
  • Dual core chip - not sure how would this matter, but still something to look for
  • Two cameras, HD video, facetime support
  • Smart cover  that has a  built-in magnets to draw it to iPad for a perfect fit that not only protects, but also wakes up, stands up, and brightens up iPad

The other day I was talking to one my friend for whom I am doing some freelance IT projectand he was so impressed seeing my macbookpro and we had conversation about it for 15 minutes. Now think about how an ipad 2 would make an impression on him. On other words can I tell that Apple helps you make an impression!! :)
